We are looking for a highly motivated and academically outstanding Post-Doc to work in a multidisciplinary and dynamic research environment.
The lab
The group focuses on immune responses that modulate atherosclerosis, a chronic inflammatory disease of the vascular wall that results in heart attacks and strokes. We are interested in identifying and defining these immune mechanisms, understanding their (dys)regulation and study them in the context of atherosclerosis as well as their relationship to other chronic inflammatory disorders. Our interests are clearly interdisciplinary and span vascular biology, lipid oxidation, and innate immunity.
In the past years, our research has focused on the identification and characterization of germline encoded natural IgM antibodies as well as of soluble pattern recognition proteins, such as complement factor H, that bind oxidation-epitopes. Another important focus is on the inflammatory response of macrophages in atherosclerosis.
Current projects aim at the detailed characterization of innate immune responses that mediate the recognition of oxidation-specific epitopes, such as malondialdehyde-adducts, and particularly how these responses can be exploited to protect from atherosclerosis. In addition, the role of B-cell subsets and natural antibodies in atherosclerosis are being investigated.

Successful candidates
An ideal candidate would have an MD and/or PhD in Molecular Medicine or Immunology. Additional background in Chemistry is advantageous. Candidates are expected to be independent, scientific-orientated and self-motivated. We favour those with high accuracy and reliability as well as excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in an international team. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are indispensable.
Applicants should submit a detailed letter of motivation and curriculum vitae, including the contact details of the PhD supervisor and two additional referees to vesna.krajina@meduniwien.ac.at until November 30th, 2012.
