Research Associate in Optics/Vision Science
Kingston University London Faculty of Science, Engineering and Computing
Salary: £35,065 £38,102 per annum
Fixed term appointment for 3 years
An exciting new position funded by the leading charity Fight for Sight is available for a post-doctoral research associate with expertise in applied physics, biophysics or optics of the eye. The position will be based in the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Computing at the Roehampton Vale campus and will involve collaboration with Cardiff University, the National University of Ireland in Galway and experimental visits (1-2/year) to SPring8, the world’s largest third generation synchrotron facility in Japan.
This project is concerned with determining precisely the nature of the refractive index gradient in the human eye lens using advanced interferometric measurements, at the synchrotron facility, combined with ray tracing for different wavelengths of light and varying focus levels of the lens. This data will be used to develop eye models that are needed for the design of new generation implant lenses that will improve vision following cataract surgery.
Applicants should have a background in optics, physical sciences, applied mathematics or biophysics with expertise in one or more of the following areas:
A PhD or equivalent is required in applied physics, physical sciences or biophysics (particularly in relation to vision and optics of the eye).
For an informal discussion please contact Professor Barbara Pierscionek email: b.pierscionek@kingston.ac.uk or telephone 0208 4174821/4174731.
